When it comes to deodorant, I have been very limited over the last few years. I used to be able to pick up any off-the-shelf deodorant and use it, whether it was a roll-on, spray or cream. I’m not sure if the formulas have been changed, as even my kids struggle to find something effective, and they’re only 11 and 14.
The most-effective deodorant I have found to work for m and my family is the Sure maximum protection 96-hour cream stick. The RRP for these is £5 each, but there are often offers. This is NOT VEGAN-FRIENDLY. I have been looking for an effective vegan-friendly deodorant for a while and was dubious about the ‘all-natural’ formula of Wild, so I have held back, but after seeing many good reviews for the product, I decided to plunge in and purchase one each for me and the kids.
We’ve been using this product for a week now, so It’s time for the verdict. We’ll start off with a section about deodorants in general and then dive in and answer the most important questions about a deodorant.
Why are most deodorants not vegan-friendly?
Many deodorants on the market are not vegan-friendly due to the ingredients they contain and the testing methods used in their development. A significant ingredient to watch out for is beeswax, a substance produced by bees, which is commonly used in various beauty and personal care products, including deodorants. Other ingredients, such as lanolin, a wax secreted by the sebaceous glands of wool-bearing animals, and glycerine, which can be animal-derived, are also frequently found in deodorants. Additionally, some brands test their products on animals, a practice that is not aligned with vegan principles. Hence, while there are vegan-friendly deodorants available, a considerable number still use animal-derived ingredients or engage in animal testing, making them unsuitable for those following a vegan lifestyle.
What’s different about Wild deodorants?
Wild deodorants stand out in the crowded personal care market with their all-natural, cruelty-free, and vegan-friendly formula. They are consciously crafted using a unique blend of essential oils and natural botanicals, completely free of harmful chemicals and synthetic fragrances. Key ingredients include tapioca starch and sodium bicarbonate, which help absorb moisture and neutralize odour, and caprylic/capric triglyceride derived from coconut oil and glycerine, which keeps the skin moisturized and aids in smooth application.
What makes Wild deodorant especially appealing to vegans and eco-conscious consumers is their commitment to sustainability and animal welfare. These factors, along with their biodegradable, plastic-free refills and reusable aluminium cases, make Wild deodorants an excellent choice for individuals seeking effective, natural odour protection that aligns with their ethical and environmental values.
Is Wild an antiperspirant?
While Wild deodorant is highly effective at combating body odour, it’s important to note that it is not an antiperspirant. Antiperspirants and deodorants are distinct in their function. Antiperspirants work by using aluminium salts to block sweat ducts, thereby reducing the amount of perspiration that reaches your skin.
Deodorants, on the other hand, do not prevent sweating but rather focus on neutralizing or masking the smell of sweat. Wild deodorant falls into the latter category. It utilizes natural ingredients like tapioca starch and baking soda to absorb moisture and neutralize odour, along with essential oils to provide a pleasant scent.
Wild does not contain aluminium or any other ingredients designed to prevent you from sweating. This allows your body to carry out its natural cooling and detoxification process while still offering effective odour control.
Is Wild Deodorant Any Good
I’ve been pleasantly surprised with Wild in the past week. Having been let down by most antiperspirants on the market, I was expecting a non-anti-perspirant to be even worse. Gladly, that hasn’t been the case. All three family members have made it to days-end without any unpleasant BO.
We dig in further with some important questions answered below.
Application: Ease of Use and Comfort
Wild Deodorants come with an attractive, reusable aluminium case. These cases are available in a range of colours, with some limited-edition cases available. You can even opt to pay to have your name engraved. Alongside the case, you choose your deodorant stick, which, again, is available in a range of natural scents.
I chose three different colour cases and three different scents for me and the kids. These sticks are easy to change, and the waste is compostable! The stick doesn’t glide as easily as a cream deodorant but did glide on a lot more freely than many other stick deodorants I have tried in the past. There was no friction.
Scent Profile: Fragrance Intensity and Longevity
I opted to try the limited-edition Cherry Blossom scent, coconut and vanilla and fresh cotton and sea salt. All three smelled pleasant, although it was disappointing that there weren’t any particularly masculine options for my son. That being said, his favourite was actually the cherry blossom when we smelled them all. Judging by the cases and scents, I would say these products are primarily marketed to women.
After application, the scent of the deodorant is pleasantly strong. I could smell it for a good few hours after application, and this was nice as they smelled fresh and clean. This wears off over the course of the day.
Efficacy: Sweat Protection and Odour Control
Having tested these for a week, all three of us have remained odour free and dry. My son is particularly active playing sports in the summer heat, and even he has not had any problems with sweat patches or BO, which is impressive.
I would say that these deodorants offer about 12 hours of protection rather than 24 hours, though. Upon waking in the morning on the first day, I was sweaty and had some body odour. I would recommend applying in the morning and before bed to stay protected overnight, especially in the summer months.
Skin Reaction: Irritation and Sensitivity Test
None of us had any adverse reaction to the Wild deodorant, but they do offer a sensitive version which has no baking soda, albeit in a limited range of fragrances. I would say these deodorants are very pleasant to wear, and I have recommended them to my friends. One has sensitive skin, so when she has used it for a few days, I will come back to update with her verdict.
Value for Money: Price and Performance Comparison
These deodorants are sold in two parts. The case, which was priced at £10 at the time of writing this review and the refills, which come in at £5 each, although I have seen discounts at some high-street retailers, such as Boots, for these.
I personally did not mind paying for the cases as they are high-quality and they help to reduce plastic waste. I enjoy the convenience of subscription services. There have been many times lately when Asda have not been able to deliver our Sure deodorants, and we have had some terrible substitutes for them. The subscription means we should never be caught short.
In terms of monthly price, Wild is a lot more expensive than many deodorants on the market today, but it’s similarly priced to the one I was previously using, so it makes sense to me.

The Verdict
Is it as effective as my previous deodorant? No, but I was using an antiperspirant with 96 hours of performance. The two products are not really comparing apples with apples. The only downside is it doesn’t last as long as the Sure deodorant. I combat this by applying it again before bed, which I’m not mad about.
The Sure cream stick used to leave huge white marks on my clothes and took forever to dry, the Wild stick doesn’t do this. The Wild Stick is natural and probably far better for my body.
Will I make the permanent switch…? ABSOLUTELY, from now on, my family and I will be using Wild. We might even try some of the other products, such as the shampoo bars!
