Milk is a staple in many people’s diets. But, did you know that there are some scary things hidden inside? The next time you sit down to pour the milk for your cereal, take a closer look at what’s inside. You’ll be surprised by what you see! We’re going to discuss 6 reasons why dairy is scary and not meant for human consumption!
Humans not only drink cows milk, but we also use it to make other foods like cheese and yoghurt. So here are our top reasons that dairy is scary.
Cow’s milk is meant for…well, cows.
Cow’s milk is meant for baby cows, not people! Humans have been drinking the breastmilk of other animals for centuries, but cow’s milk is the predominant choice. Like meat, our bodies were not designed to process dairy. It’s thought that early farmers in Western Europe were the first to start drinking milk. It provided a source of nutrients when food was harder to come by.
Milk is meant to help baby cows grow-to a whopping 550 pounds within one year! Mother’s milk for baby cows contains about three times as much protein and seven times more fat than mother’s milk for baby humans
Just like human breast milk, cow’s milk is meant to deliver all the vital nutrients that a calf needs to grow. But humans are not calves. We do not need all of these nutrients, particularly the growth hormones and proteins that are found in cow’s milk, especially in adulthood.
Such growth hormones and proteins can cause hormone imbalances, cancerous tumours, early puberty for children (causing mood swings or acne) and other health problems. No wonder there has been a rise in dairy allergies over the last few decades! Even if you’re not lactose intolerant, it’s best not to eat dairy.
Dairy is bad for your health
There is a lot of controversy surrounding the consumption of cow’s milk. It has been linked to many different types of cancer, such as colon cancer or breast cancer. High levels of IGF-I in dairy products have also been known to cause insulin resistance and diabetes.
Below are some of the known health problems associated with consuming dairy:
*There is a link between cow’s milk consumption and prostate cancer
*Studies have shown high levels of IGF-I in dairy products which have been linked to certain types of cancer such as breast and prostate
*One glass of milk contains about 300mg of calcium. Humans need around 300mg per day-not 1000+ like the dairy industry leads you to believe! The rest will be excreted from your body which can cause a build-up inside your arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease.
In fact, the World Health Organization has recently classified milk as carcinogenic. In their report titled ‘International Agency for Research on Cancer’, they have placed dairy in the category of “carcinogenic to humans.” The primary reasoning behind this is due to scientific evidence that shows consumption increases your risk of colorectal cancer by nearly a fifth.
Studies show that women who regularly drink milk have a 50% higher chance of contracting ovarian or breast cancer than other non-milk drinkers. And men who eat dairy products are more likely to get prostate cancer. The high amounts of IGF (insulin growth factor) in cow’s milk stimulate the production and activity of cancer cells in the human body.
Dairy is not meant for humans. Milk is for babies and growing calves-not adults who drink it to get their calcium! It causes health problems such as obesity, acne, diabetes and cancers. We should all stop drinking milk immediately if we care about our health; no one needs dairy in their diet (or ever did).
Milk contains nasties like pus
Milk comes from the udders of a nursing cow. It can contain things like pus, blood, antibiotics and growth hormones. It is not healthy for any living being to drink another’s milk no matter which species it comes from!
Dairy products are often contaminated with pesticides that are used on the cows feed or injected into their bodies. These compounds pass through our bodies when eating or drinking dairy products like milk, cheese, cream, yoghurt etc.
The enzymes in our stomachs are not designed to digest milk. As a result, people who drink dairy products regularly can suffer from bloating and diarrhoea. Their intestines cannot absorb the nutrients efficiently; they end up with serious nutrient deficiencies like iron deficiency anaemia (which leads to fatigue) or even osteoporosis because of calcium deficiencies.
Cow’s are raped
Yes, you read that correctly. In order for any mammal to produce milk, they need to have babies to feed. In dairy farms, farmers impregnate the cows every year, so they will continue to give milk. These mothers are ripped away from their babies (they can be as young as a couple of days old) and often slaughtered. The mother cows cry tears and howl for their loss.
The farmers literally rape the cows, inserting their arms inside and inseminating them artificially to impregnate them. This is done over and over again until the cow’s no good anymore.
To the left you can see the technique to inseminate a cow artificially. This is a downloadable PDF by Dairy Australia detailing how to insert an arm into a cow’s anus and a semen gun into her vagina to impregnate her.
Cows are murdered
From the male calves ripped away from their mothers, which serve no use in the dairy industry, to the cows when they stop being productive. All of these animals end up being killed
So, next time you’re thinking about having a glass of milk or eating that cheese burger, take into consideration what it took for that to get to your plate.
And if this doesn’t convince you, then watch Cowspiracy (Netflix) and Earthlings (Youtube). Those are some great documentaries exploring various issues.
Dairy is bad for the environment
Dairy farming has a negative impact on the environment. This is due to the sheer demand for dairy and the number of cattle involved. This requires land, water and food in huge amounts to satisfy the enormous demand.
As well as the resources utilised in the dairy industry, there is also a problem with the cow’s emissions which are contributing more to global warming than cars and planes.
Also, dairy farming has been linked with deforestation, irrigation of freshwater sources in drought-ridden areas to grow crops for animal feed which is a massive contributor to the water crisis we are facing today.
To us at least, it’s clear that dairy is scary. In short: there’s many reasons why you should stop consuming dairy products… ASAP! This article is a brief look into them. You can better educate yourself on the dairy industry and the effects of dairy on your body through documentaries such as What the health and Cowspiracy.
With plenty of alternatives to milk on the market now that are far healthier, the need to drink cow’s milk is non-existent past infancy. You can even try and make your own plant-based milk with our recipe here. The cheeses may not be as appealing to everyone but coming from a cheese lover who put it on everything, since watching these eye-opening documentaries, I haven’t touched any.
